August 27th, Weekend work...
In a 24/7 environment, working on the weekend isn’t that unusual. In hospitality, it is the best, most common days to be, of course. I have a string of Saturday shifts coming up with the catering venue I joined about 6 years ago. Friends, that when I shared, I needed some work to do while I figure out what next, welcomed me. The industry is my entire life and as anyone in it will tell you, once in your blood it never goes away (in a good way to me). Though I only pick up ‘busy days’, it’s hard to give up completely.
What I have always loved about the business is it’s about creating, having memorable, positive experiences. No one goes out to dinner, looking to have a bad time. All the events that celebrate life in various ways opportunities for positive social engagement. As an ‘employee’ responsible for the outcome, I like to break it down to simply, we get to be a part of giving others an opportunity to be happy (and nourished) for the hour, or few, we are serving them.
Restaurants, and events, though common in centered around meals – definitely have their uniqueness as well. I knew all about dining, so learning the difference has been fascinating to me. That event I use to attend regularly, I took on a whole new appreciation for the work that goes into it. And to be a part of it…as I often say, there’s something very rewarding about going to a job that you ‘labor’ at, see immediate results, and ‘finish’ at the end of your shift.
Hmmm, clock in/clock out…day 44!
Thank you if you choose to join the journey. Let's hope it is more fun than tears!
